Bioware, the creators of one of the best RPG games of all time "Dragon Age Origins," are really starting to figure out how to make their games more memorable by creating character that can that have full personality and back story.
The characters in Dragon Age are not loyal to you just for simply being there, you have to talk to them, like real people, and figure out what is bothering them. Every character has a mission that will make him/her more loyal to you. You can also give them gifts to try and win their loyalty. Some gifts are special to some character and will trigger a mission if you give it to them.
The decision that you make in the game also influences what the character thinks of you. For example if you do something pure evil some of your team mates might disapprove or even leave your party forever. This really makes them feel more like real people and not just some NPC that is only there because it has to be.
What makes this even more potent is that when you make a decision in the game that they don't fully agree with they can try and convince you to make a different decision. This even further makes them more like real humans.
When you explore the huge world from time to time your characters will start chatting with each other. This means that every single character in the game like or dislikes certain characters. This can sometimes be very funny. Do yourself a favor and put Alistair and Morrigan in your party and you will have plenty laughs.
If you talk to your party members in the camp they will open up more to you and talk about personal matters or tell you what they think about the other characters.
Bioware went all out on this game and it was worth it. Other games should take notes at how to create realistic character personalities.
